Western Premium Pro-Tech Felt Saddle Pad – Felt Base is virgin wool.custom saddle fit shims inserts

To be a better-balanced rider with a more responsive, sounder horse try ThinLine.

So how does a 3/16” thick pad of ThinLine stitched onto a 1/2” thick,  wool felt pad make you a better-balanced rider and your horse more responsive and sounder? In a few ways…

The thin, Pro-Tech Felt Saddle Pad provides more shock absorption than a 2 inch thick felt pad. Pressure points are eliminated due to less bulk, the pad is soft and flexible, allowing it it fit neatly and comfortably against your horses’ natural confirmation, and communication is reestablished. Without all that material between  you and your horse you can feel each other, but all without the extra movement and “dead” feel of thick pads and gel pads.

For the horse, this pad has a wither-relief cutout which is best for moderate to low or mutton withered horses and a spine-free channel, further reducing the chance of pressure points.  This thin pad frees up more room for narrow or snug-fitting saddles and improves the comfort for horses even with saddles which are perfectly fitted. The ThinLine also ventilates, across the pad, allowing excess heat to move out from under the saddle.  Most important, to your horse, is how this pads creates stability.  Stability creates freedom.

For the rider, this pad’s slim design puts you in closer contact with your horse, so your leg can easily drape giving you a seamless feel of his sides.  You’ll notice his back moving more,  but with the extraordinary shock absorption of ThinLine you will be moving in unison with your mount.  The ThinLine layer sewn onto the pad has a 95% shock absorption rate that spreads impact LATERALLY  along the pad. This means that the motion you feel under you as you ride is absorbed by the ThinLine and transferred ACROSS the pad instead of UP into your spine. And this same shock absorption benefit is being enjoyed by your horse as well.

With reduced movement of your seat, your balance is easier to keep so “staying” with your horse, even during quick stops and starts, becomes second nature. You sit quieter, and he responds with a relaxed, soft back, and freer strides.

Saddle Fit: The Pro-Tech is also shimmable, which lets you resolve fitting problems with less expense. You can customize saddle fit from one horse to another or make temporary adjustments for a horse whose body is changing.

Available in both square, 2 sizes, and round skirt styles.  For  a less expensive version of this pad – our brown felt blend is available.

Shimming for protection and saddle fit:

Underneath the ThinLine layer is a pocket to insert shims. If you need help with minor saddle fit adjustments, purchase this Western felt saddle pad and use it alone or add shims. Either way, your saddle will fit better and your horse will use his back better and stay sounder longer.  Shims are made of the same amazing ThinLine material. Felt Saddle Pad Care Instructions

Our felt saddle pads have a high percentage of wool content. To avoid shrinkage, do not use hot water to clean, or heat to dry. Occasionally brush your pad with a curry brush. This will dislodge hair, dirt, and sweat to prolong the usefulness of your pad. Wool pads can be washed by scrubbing the dirty spots with a cloth or sponge, using cold water and a small amount of mild liquid wool-washing soap (We recommend EZ All). Hose all the soap off with clean water and allow the pad to air dry in a well-ventilated area. As you’re hosing, be sure to direct the spay from the center outward toward the edges, so that dirt, sweat, and hair is moved off of the pad and instead of being pushed into the pad.

I was unsure about buying a saddle pad from overseas, specially as I could not view the product, I didn’t really see how the claims about shock absorption were possible.. also with the exchange rate it became an expensive blanket — however it is AWESOME, totally worth it, it really does shock absorb, I could feel the difference in my horses movement and in my spine right away. I thought I had imagined it so I got two of my friends ride their horses in their normal saddle pads then put my Thinline pad on, both of them were “blown away” with how the saddle moved less, their horses also moved better and they could feel less jarring in their spines. So excited, highly recommend, just this week I have just this week managed to order a second one for my partner .. can’t say enough good things about them.

    (verified owner):

I have a young horse that started welting on his spine after rides…the same saddle/pad combo had never been an issue before so I wasn’t sure what was happening. I tried different saddles and pad combos after that and each caused an issue. A friend let me borrow her ThinLine pad for one ride and I was sold. No welts, no hair rubs, no soreness, perfectly dry spine and the sweat marks were even. I have since purchased the felt pad and girth and am very impressed with the quality and effects on my youngster.

Questions and answers of the customers

  1. A Thank you for your question! The felt base pad measures 1/2" thick and the Ultra ThinLine panel is 3/16" thick. So, yes, along the top of the pad, where the ThinLine is layered over the felt, the total thickness is 11/16".
  2. A Thank you for your question! The medium has a 27" spine length and a 14.5" drop and will be a good fit for your saddle. You may want to take a look at our new full length Booster Shim. It provides extra lift off of the spine without changing saddle fit and is great for treeless saddles.
  3. A Thanks for your question! Cleaning instructions for each pad are located under the Care Instructions tab at the very bottom of the product page. We recommend EZ All Multipurpose Cleaner for the wash. Please follow the link below to take you to the product page.
  4. A Thank you for your question and for bringing this to our attention! The measurement in the photo refers to the longest part of the pad, front to back, which is 28.5". Due to the wither relief cutout, the length of the spine is 27".
  5. A Thanks for your question! The difference between these two pads is the grade of felt. Available in brown, the Pro-Tech is made with very high quality wool felt, while the gray Premium Pro-Tech is made with the highest quality virgin wool felt available.
  6. A Thanks for your question! This pad has a cutout underneath the wear leather, allowing for closer contact in that area.
  7. A The sizing information is located in the Sizing tab at the very bottom of the product page. The medium Premium Pro Tech has a 27″ spine length and a 13.5″ drop. The large has a 31″spine length and a 15″ drop.
